The latest CCNP Enterprise Certification made a new change to the device quantity. For years, the CCNP always required a four router and four switch topology. With the new certification, Cisco has technically reduced this down to only a three router and three switch topology. This is great news because this means CCNP is now more affordable than ever! With less devices required for your CCNP kit, you can also put your buying power into a lower number of higher end devices. This also means that CCNP now shares the same device count as CCNA and CCNA Security / Network Security 1.0, etc. So, with this lab you can complete multiple certification tracks!
Even though the latest "official" equipment list from Cisco suggests an optional two additional switches (five switches total), the currently posted labs do not exceed three switches. This is also definitely a lot less than the price of attending a Cisco CCNA training class or boot camp and you will get to keep the equipment to practice on for as long as you like, even after you certify! You could then even explore incorporating them into your home network! This is also key because a lot of the real deep learning truly begins when you can tinker with your own lab, on your own time and at your own pace. In addition, the CCNP ENCORE 350-401 exam is also now the prerequisite for CCIE, so you’ll have the building blocks in place to move up the certification ladder after completing your CCNP! If you do want to go inline with the five switch recommendation by Cisco, please just let us know and we will be more than happy to customize your lab to your perfect fit!
*If you were to add an ASA 5505 or 5510 to this lab you would also be able to complete the CCNA Security / Network Security v1.0 topics. Another option new to the CCNP certification track is that having a CCNA is no longer a pre-requisite to take the CCNP exam. So, if you have some experience or if you have some some serious ambition, you can skip right ahead to the CCNP exam. We should also point out that CCNP and CCIE actually share the same core requirement now. So, by working on your CCNP, you are actually already building your template for CCIE and one step ahead in your progression to becoming a networking master!
The new CCNP does recommend security licenses on your routers and all models in this kit come with BOTH the base AND the permanent security licenses on all routers.
This kit comes with (1) 4331 Sec/K9 and (2) 1941 Sec/K9. The idea here is to give you one router that is a perfect and seamless match to what the exam was written for and two routers that can handle just about everything, but keeps the price much more budget friendly. We think this is a excellent solution for the ambitious student or professional looking to have access to the latest and greatest, while also running some exceptional G2 routers won't break the bank.
The routers also come installed with a total of Two T1 Serial Ports from the installed NIM-xMFT-T1 Modules, Four more T1 Serial Ports from the HWIC-1DSU-T1 modules and three WIC-Serial crossover cables for your serial connections (still required for CCNP and CCNA Sec) in addition to the Ethernet crossover/straight-through cables for your LAN connections between the routers.
For the switches, let’s talk about Cisco’s official recommendation of the 1000 series C1000-24T-4G-L and 9300L switches. We thought long and hard about this and there is a bit to unpack here. First off, these are extremely expensive on the market right now and also highly unavailable. The 9300L is an even larger jump than the 9300L and so expensive that even a training academy would never make their money back if they outfitted labs with these switches (the current market cost on these is truly shocking, then multiply that by 2x-4x for the topology). Why would Cisco make these their official recommendation? In short, the answer is for optics and because the main supply for them is to primarily buy the product directly from them, along with their dramatically expensive service and DNA contracts. More money for Cisco. As far as capability goes, other than adding gigabit ports to the recommended switch, the 1000 series doesn’t really provide any other benefits to lab purposes for the massive price increase that they require. For the 9300L, there are also much more affordable options that run IOS XE that make much more sense and won’t require you to take out a second mortgage! So, we got to doing what we do best, and decided to get creative to provide a better alternative solution for our customers while also saving them a great deal of money. After much tinkering and research, we decided to offer the Cisco 3650 in place of both of these switches. The 3650 is a high end gigabit switch that runs IOS XE to match your 4xxx series routers. The 3650 is also a device that is well known for its reliability, proven in production environments and commonly deployed in live networks (You’ll see a lot of these in the field for quite some time). The best part about it is that, not only are you getting a switch with exceptional IOS XE capability, you’re matching IOS XE to your 4331 with your 3650 for considerably less money!
*Please note that we screen our 3650 switches to be running a full and working IOS below where SmartNet is required. This works perfect for lab and learning purposes! However, if you choose to update the the IOS past 16.9.1, you will need to register SmartNet through Cisco.
This kit comes with (1) 3650 IOS XE Switch and is paired with (2) 3560G switches. So, you'll have layer 3 tech and gigabit ports across your entire switching topology! With everything in this kit, you can even explore using these devices in your home network if you get extra ambitious.
We have worked in partnership with Cisco NetAcad instructors and CCIEs to release our kits that are ready for the CCNA 200-301 exam. This time around, Cisco has released a couple topology options covering their minimum hardware topology/hardware requirements and their recommended requirements and the optimal learning experience. To satisfy the minimum requirement, Cisco is requiring two routers and two switches. However, our recommendation and Cisco’s recommendation is to run a three router and three switch lab. This is also the topology we write our lab workbook for because we know this is going to best prepare you to pass the CCNA! If you don’t want to go with a three router and three switch setup, don’t worry, you can still do all the labs by scaling back a two router and two switch kit. Cisco does have a small wireless component that will be part of the new exam, but this is simply a generic wireless router that you likely already have at home. We do however have an add-on option in this kit to add a Cisco Access Point and the labs to support it in our lab workbook if you want to go on a deeper dive into wireless.

***Why should you consider going with the Smart Serial Option over the 1DSU-T1 option***
The HWIC-1DSU Serial cards and NIM-MFT-T1 Modules are a great, budget friendly option for lab purposes and in this case a vey good pick because the smart serial option for the 4xxx series are a pricey upgrade. However, if your budget allows, we always recommend upgrading to the Smart Serial HWIC cards / NIM Modules and Smart Serial-to-Smart Serial cables. Smart serial is a more current technology that offers a faster DCE/DTE connection that will also use the same clock rate command you will see when you see serial connections on Cisco exams. Once again, the T1 Serial cards will work just fine (there is a small work around that you will need to explore), but if you want to be the most up to date and want the clock rate commands to match identically like you would see when you are sitting an exam, the smart serial upgrade is an excellent choice.
The G2 Router Upgrade Options provide you with a wide range of models across the series. The default selection for this lab already has (2) 1941 Sec/K9. In case you want to customize things a bit, we provide the option to upgrade any number of the routers to the 2911, which is the largest/heaviest unit (shipping is a little more for these because of the added weight) and also 2U. The 2911 has the most expansion options with additional module slots, more HWIC slots and can even accommodate voice hardware upgrades. The 2911 is available here as Security license (to once again unlock those security features to match the default 1941 Sec routers in this kit) or the V/Sec (This is Base + Security + UCK9 (voice). This is a good option if you also want to explore voice topics in the future.) These are permanent licenses that are pre-installed and unlock a lot of additional capability and security features.
The Optional Wireless Access Point Option comes with an 1142 Wireless AP and the power brick for the unit. Once again, you do not need this to get through the wireless component of the 200-301 exam. However, this is a pretty cheap add-on that will give you an opportunity to expand your knowledge past the exam. There is nothing wrong with being a little over-prepared!
*If you are looking for a deeper dive into studying wireless topics, we would recommend taking a look at our Wireless Lan Controller and Dual AP Pack. This pairs a well known and reliable WLC with a couple of APs so you can tinker with plenty of wireless scenarios and configurations.
The Supplemental CCNA Training DVD is about 22+ hours of extra CCNA level training in a video format. Do you need this to pass your exam? Absolutely not because all the training your need is already included with your kit! This DVD does cover a lot of legacy material and is not entirely up to date, however it still has a great deal of very useful knowledge that every engineer should know and will run into on the job. We used to sell this DVD for a few hundred dollars, but have priced it super affordably for those who want to widen the scope of their curriculum. There is still a lot of overlap here with the current exam, so you will get a lot of topics covered that are on there, just not every topic.
The FTDI Console Cable Upgrade swaps out the classic console cable for this new solution to complete your console connection. This is our newest option for your console connection. This cable has the new FTDI chip installed and eliminates the need for both the classic console connection and the USB-Serial Adapter! It goes directly from USB to RJ-45! Another great bonus to this, from our testing, is that it has a near perfect success rate in the break sequence working! (used to reset the router, password recovery, etc). This is a big bonus because the converters can be a bit of a pain in that department. All around, this is an excellent addition to any techs tool box! *If you do not have a 9-Pin serial port on your computer (most modern computers do not) or a USB-to-Serial converter, you will need this to complete your console (management) connection. We highly recommend this.

The Access Server is purely a convenience tool and not a requirement for your exam. While these are common device types in data centers everywhere and a great thing to have knowledge of, they are not a requirement to pass your exam. However, if you don't want to physically move a cable every time you change devices, have an interest in remote access possibilities, or want to broaden you knowledge, an access server is a great device to have in your kit! All of our 2509 and 2511 access servers sold with kits also now come with the transceiver add-on so you can get the device on the LAN, perform upgrades/recovery and explore remote access capability.
